Girls, have you ever dated someone you told you just wanted to be friends with?

I was hanging at with this girl for a few months, slowly becoming more attracted to her, going to bars, and a few concerts but mostly just dinner and movies. I thought she liked me so I asked her if we could start seeing each other. She said she couldn't be in a relationship right now and that we should just be friends. Is this the death knell? In the history of "lets just be friends" has any woman ever come around later? I gotta know Ive been sick about it ever since.
