California coast road trip?

This summer I'm taking a one week road trip up the pacific coast from orange county to san francisco. I wish I had more time, but I don't, so i'm asking for the must-see places along the route. What are the best places to stay? I'm looking for nice resorts, great food, and great scenery but nothing too cheesy and touristy. I need help creating the itinerary.
