Left for dead 2 sound problems?

recently when ever i would play left for dead 2, i wouldn't be able to hear things like the tank music that is played when a tank is coming or even the midnight riders music at the concert. i play on the pc and i have the game going though steam. has anyone had this problem or a similar one and have a way to fix it?
